In the past decade, China has stepped up its role in the Western Balkans as a financier of infrastructure and a source of direct investment, while at the same time searching to develop political relations with the countries of the region. The geopolitical implications of China\u2019s increased presence in the Balkans however remain hard to grasp.<\/p>\n
To what extent does China try to, through its Belt and Road initiatives, get a foothold in the EU\u2019s \u201cinner courtyard\u201d? What are its exact intensions? And to what extent does China\u2019s increased presence in the region conflict with the common aspirations of the EU and the Western Balkans countries of further EU integration?<\/p>\n
